The Miramichi (Rski XXIII)
After a bunch of planning and disappointments, we decided to spend our last full weekend in Miramichi, New Brunswick. Woo.
Friday, August 4
I get up at 3:30 AM and shower, etc. because we have to take the bus at 6:00 AM, so we have to be at the bus station around 5:30 AM at the latest. Alix comes and gets me in a cab at about 4:45AM and we head off to pick up Kollene, who is still asleep! Her alarm clock didn't go off or she understandably shut it off. Anyway, so she gets her stuff together in about 10 minutes and we're off. We get tickets, "Miramichi? OK then..." err it was more "Miramichi ? Bon, alors.." So the bus gets there and we head off...
Here's our trail..
That's where we hit the future...err the next time zone
That's right, right back through Campbellton, and the:
PikQuik/Dinky bar
Snazzy bus...the OrleansExpress (which Marie-Noelle and I referred to as Orlean Sexpress) buses have power outlets so we can watch movies on our laptops because we're big nerds. We watched "Grbavica" which was amazing. I have a copy if anyone is interested.
On the bus ride down, I was stuck sitting next to this guy who wouldn't shut the hell up. I felt bad though because he was blind and couldn't see that I didn't really care to chat. Cleary, I am going to hell.
Calling as many seats as possible...the bus was pretty empty, so we took tons of seats and then snagged the back row which has 3 seats in a row.
Food sack!
Then our voyage continued:
So sometime around noon we get to Miramichi...and check into our hotel, err motel, we went all out.
We asked about getting to town, etc.
Turns out it was about a 20 minute walk.
The other end of town.
They had these all over the place, it was wicked.
They take the parking situation seriously in the Miramichi.
We walked the whole of the northern shore, picked up some booze for later and then didn't really know what to do with ourselves... naturally, being in the epitome of Canadania, we...
got some Timmy's. Kollene got some fibre/beige/cardboard thing.
We ate in the main square in "downtown" - the block with the most amount of stores.
Monuments.
The park.
Miramichi is on the Miramichi River, the other side of the River is also considered Miramichi after the merger.
We walked along the wharf...
At this point we were really hyper from all the sugar and caffiene we just consumed.
Then I punked Alix' camera...and all havoc broke loose..well not really, I just started acting like a buffoon.
wonky eye.
Alix and Kollene by the Miramichi River.
Hyper and wanting to be artsy.
Canada! Go!
Alix trying to figure out where we are...or maybe that was posed.
Kollene and stuff.
Seagull doing something interesting?
Then we walked over to Ritchie's Wharf. There was this thing set up like a ship.
And a boardwalk. It was all quite the small town cute.
The bridge to the other side of the Miramichi.
LIGHTHOUSE! Why do they have a lighthouse 20 km from the ocean?
The wharf is really small.
But it has some nice restaurants and boutiques.
Stubby lighthouse.
After wandering around for a while, we had some dinner at a pub, which was greeeaaasy...then headed back to the motel for a little resting before heading out again...on the way back to the motel, we saw:
So this is a house. Let me explain, as a kid I used to love watching home improvement type shows and this particular house is a kit. It's from the 80s and people would buy the blue prints and stuff for it and it's made up out of these triangles. They're supposedly roomy but people usually have two globe-things for a house. Apparently, they stand up well to wind. I just couldn't believe people still lived in snow-globes.
We brought these guys along.
And I was so tired I thought it would look good... here check it out. And Alix wanted a photo of me fooling everyone into thinking that I know how to use an SLR.
We also put our amaretto and ginger ale on ice...which was a whole mess to get. It kind of looks like that urban legend with the kidneys.
Anyway, so at about 8:30 it was dark. We walked about 10 minutes in the opposite direction of town to a nearby park, French Fort Cove in fact...there we met the Headless Nun. That was actually quite entertaining. We got cool mugs (my dad punked it when I got home) and were taken through the woods in the dark by Ichibod Crane (confused much?) and we met all sorts of important people, like Beauhébert and crew, who were important in the Miramichi area. It was a bunch of actors in case you were wondering. We even got attacked randomly by lepers. The only scary part was when it started thundering and they didn't know whether they'd continue or not, so we were just standing around and there was a little kid wearing his mom's white hoody. Except, they had the hood on their head and the white jacket was hanging, so in effect they really just looked like a ghost with a sheet over their head.
It started pouring rain and the walk home sucked, but it was only 10 minutes. We promptly drank ourselves silly.
And set up our ghetto sound system
And returned to the 80s.
Good night folks.
